LaserFilm Optimizes Storage for 4K Workflows with Quantum StorNext

LaserFilm
Italy’s LaserFilm post-production studio has experienced a steady rise in 4K projects. Its TV and film production clients are shifting to 4K resolution, mainly based on DPX format, to meet consumer expectations for pristine, detailed visuals. LaserFilm is deeply committed to supporting cutting-edge technologies, including the latest 4K formats. But working with uncompressed DPX files pushed the studio’s existing SAN to its limits.
Team members required high-performance storage that would allow them to work with large files. At the same time, the studio needed a scalable environment that could support continuously growing data volumes. Any new storage system also had to provide fast, simple access to files regardless of what operating system and applications team members use. And to facilitate efficient collaboration, the storage environment had to be centralized.
Implementing Centralized Storage with Quantum
With input from Video Progetti, a solution provider and system integrator for media studios, LaserFilm selected Quantum’s StorNext File System running on the high-performance Xcellis appliance. Xcellis with StorNext provides the foundation for a centralized, tiered storage environment that integrates high-performance disk, high-capacity disk, data tape, and (eventually for LaserFilm) cloud storage.
“We selected Quantum storage as it is the best-performing storage solution and delivers an exceptional quality-cost ratio,” says Andrea Di Nardo, managing director of LaserFilm. “The Quantum StorNext solution enabled us to centralize extremely fast storage, provide easy access to files from all workstations, and enforce some discipline for using storage as part of the creative process.”
Enabling 4K Workflows with High-Performance Storage
The high-performance Xcellis appliance allows LaserFilm team members to work efficiently with large, uncompressed 4K files. With a highly responsive experience for editing tasks, color grading, visual effects processing, and more, the LaserFilm team can meet extremely short turnaround times.
Providing Fast, Simple Access to Files
With a centralized storage environment, team members can find files quickly, across tiers. Because StorNext supports a full range of post-production applications and workstation operating systems, team members can tap into the storage environment without altering their workflows. They can access files from Windows, UNIX, or Linux workstations just as easily as from Mac workstations. Simple access to files has been particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the StorNext solution, LaserFilm employees have been able to stay productive, collaborate efficiently, and meet tight deadlines—all while working from home.
Gaining Scalability for the Future
The Xcellis solution enables LaserFilm to expand its environment seamlessly as the number and resolution of files continue to grow. Designed specifically for service-oriented post-production houses, the Xcellis solution scales under a single file system. As the studio takes on more and more 4K projects, LaserFilm can store all of the files in one place and continue to provide easy, collaborative access for all of its team members.
Video Progetti Helps NVP to Push the Technological Bounds of OB Van Design

Machine Learning and AI also added to the OB7 van
Roma, Italy _ 8 March, 2021
Cementing their ongoing working relationship with production company and long-standing client NVP, Video Progetti have recently concluded a program of advising and supplying a range of ground-breaking UHD and HDR-ready production and broadcast technologies as part of NVP’s newest OB7 Van fleet upgrade.
A collaborative project headed by NVP’s CEO Ivan Pintabona, with bodywork completed by Tommasini, Video Progetti’s recommendation for technical setup represents the strategic backbone of the project. With Pintabona’s intention to make the OB7 the Flagship of the NVP fleet, the ability to deliver UHD and HDR productions was the central point of focus. But in line with Video Progetti’s wider philosophy of client engagement, it was important to think not only of the deployment of cutting-edge solutions, but instead the wider business case of the organisation, the strategic contribution of each technological element and their interplay within the installation as a whole – both in terms of technological integration as well as logistics and ergonomics.
This resulted in the inclusion of both 5G public internet access and an exceptionally flexible and powerful Sirius 800 hybrid router to facilitate direct connection with final users; allowing them to interact with live content through the distribution system. Machine learning and artificial intelligence tools also constitute a significant advancement in this new OB7 van.
Based around the aforementioned Sirius 800 router, the following solutions were integrated:
- GV LDX86N Cameras (with the van capable of accommodating up to 32): The IP connectivity, 4K shooting capabilities and 6x slow motion functionality of these cameras make them versatile in application, but particularly suited to sports production; where slow motion and exceptional detail help to communicate emotion and energy as much as action. Most significantly though, these cameras integrate Grass Valley’s Creative Grading camera control solution, which GV state ‘transforms camera shading from what was numeric on/off thinking to a holistic view of organic curves and colour shaping’ – placing far greater and more intuitive creative control in the hands of NVP’s camera operators.
- GV Kahuna switcher: Suitable across a range of production applications, the Kahuna mixer delivers 2 M/Es, 24 keyers and 36 key layers, shared across multiple production, as well as advanced 3D DVE and new 2.5D resize engines, facilitating greater control over mix effects.
- GV KMX-3921 Multiviewer: Optimized to reduce space and power consumption, the KMX-3921 delivers up to 48 multiviewer outputs per 4 RU frame, expandable to 256 outputs when connected to an upstream router. Facilitating 4K and HDR outputs, it offers the fastest processing on the market and is a key facilitator of NVP’s live-production outputs.
- Five Telestream Prisms: This SDI/IP Waveform Monitor allows shaders and editors exceptional insight into – and control over – luminance and exposure, enhancing both the technical detail and creative composition of the broadcast.
- Telestream SPG: For the provision of accurate, stable, and reliable signals in SDI/IP broadcast environments.
- TV Logic Monitors: For exceptional image clarity and accurate representation of the broadcast image.
- Lawo Audio Mixer and Wohler Audio Monitor: Optimised for IP production environments, Lawo and Wohler continue to represent a global standard in audio mixing and monitoring, and provide versatility, flexibility and full control over the audio workflow.
Set to be deployed for both national and international productions, NVP’s OB7 van has already completed its first major undertaking; live coverage of the the Napoli vs Spezia ‘serie A’ football match.
“We were delighted with how the van performed”, said Ivan Pintabona, speaking of its first outing on the 6th of January. “The technologies deployed not only facilitated the creation of an exceptionally high-quality broadcast, but they worked together seamlessly and were intuitive for the team to use. This kind of installation contributes to NVP’s overall strategic position in the market. It achieves this firstly by cementing our reputation for quality broadcast and an ability to always meet the demands of clients, and ultimately, viewers. But more than this, it contributes to our operational efficiency and our organisational flexibility; with IP connectivity to the cloud and a decent set of wheels, we can go anywhere and undertake any kind of project. As usual, Video Progetti’s expertise sits at the heart of our innovation and progress in the field of production”.
Speaking on the nature of their working relationship, CEO for Video Progetti Carlo Struzzi commented: “Working with NVP is always a pleasure. After a number of OB van projects undertaken together, we have a real understanding in terms of vision and purpose – particularly in relation to the idea that technology represents a tool for enhanced creativity, not an end in itself. It’s a symbiotic relationship where we build on the expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm of each other”.

Video Progetti Installs Unilumin Led Walls at Italian RTV38

The installation of mobile screens provides aesthetic depth and operational flexibility
Roma, Italy _ 1st February 2021
Italian System Integrator Video Progetti today announces successful completion of a studio enhancement for Italian regional broadcaster RTV38, based around the installation of versatile Unilumin LED Walls.
RTV38 is a regional private broadcaster founded in 1975 and headquartered near Firenze, Italy. It maintains four studios with a focus on producing and broadcasting news, topical content and talk shows. Video Progetti completed an initial installation for them three years ago, when the studios were fully refurbished. At the time, Video Progetti guided them on the purchase and installation of different LED Video Walls (of sizes up to 29m) to provide backgrounds, graphics and overlays for remote connections.
Due to the success of the collaboration during the initial refurbishment of the studios, when RTV38 identified a need to change the existing setup of their studios, they were keen to reach out to Video Progetti again and re-establish a working relationship.
RTV38 were motivated to engage in a restructure of the existing studio setup by virtue of the changes that have necessarily been introduced in response to the altered operating conditions of 2020. Aesthetically, RTV38 wanted to add depth to their studios, whilst practically, they needed an ability to further subdivide space and use it in a flexible manner, particularly because they had added the production and streaming of corporate events to their operational model.
Video Progetti – who hold more than twenty years of experience in the field of systems design, architecture and implementation – advised on the installation of four Unilumin vertical columns (1m x 3m) which are mounted on wheels; meaning they can be manipulated as required to create more flexible studio spaces.
Carlo Struzzi, CEO of Video Progetti, said: “Unilum LED walls were selected due to the reliability of the product, the exceptional image quality and brightness, their suitability for use in a broadcast setting, and the flexibility and ease of initial mounting and ongoing reconfiguration according to need ”.
Video Progetti also handled connection of the walls with a media server for incoming and outgoing feeds.
By careful consultation with RTV38 and an understanding of not only their technical needs, but their business needs as well, Video Progetti were able to deliver a solution which provided the required flexibility of operation, and upheld the crisp and elegant aesthetic that is the mark of RTV38’s production environment.
Fabrizio Bocci, CTO of RTV38, said of the installation: “We’ve always felt comfortable working with Video Progetti. They are careful in establishing our creative needs, and then identifying suitable technological solutions. In this case, the pandemic has seen a rise in demand for professional-level productions from corporate entities seeking to stream their conferences and leverage online platforms for communications and sales. The RTV38 studios had huge potential to accommodate this market, and Video Progetti guided us in creating a design that not only facilitated this type of production, but also enhanced our traditional broadcasting too”.

MAM, newsroom, playout and headend services to facilitate network reliability and efficiency
Roma, Italy _ 13 January, 2021
Video Progetti today announces completion of a full ecosystem installation for leading Italian broadcaster Retecapri, including MAM, newsroom, playout and headend.
With twenty years of experience in the field of systems design, architecture and implementation – covering the full spectrum of broadcast and media project management – Video Progetti were ideally placed to work with Retecapri in establishing their broadcast needs and implementing an appropriate solution.
Part of Television Broadcasting System, Retecapri focus on the development and broadcast of independent programming, particularly in relation to Classic and Arthouse films, Neapolitan and Italian comedies, and both classic and modern cartoons. Key to the upgrade of their infrastructure were elements which delivered reliable and resilient outputs, and conformed to a reasonable budget.
By assuming responsibility for the project from initiation to completion, and through the full broadcast workflow, Video Progetti were able to assemble and coordinate the best available products in each category, and ensure their compatibility and seamless integration with one another. Video Progetti therefore installed an SDI-based set of broadcast components orientated around the Grass Valley GV matrix – chosen for its status as one of the most space efficient and cost effective SDI routers in the field, as well as the ready compatibility offered by Grass Valley products.
The chosen infrastructure also included an Etere Media Asset Management system (MAM), along with Etere’s NUNZIO NRCS newsroom software. The choice of Etere MAM was based on the need to maximise the value that Retecapri holds in its extensive archives of original content, whilst the Etere NUNZIO was selected based on Retecapri’s desire for a logical, straightforward and streamlined approach to newsroom workflow; from story planning to playout. The extensive range of features in relation to planning, coordination and editing embodied in the NUNZIO software made it the ideal choice. This was combined with installation of a Portaprompt Teleprompter, chosen for robustness, reliability and ease-of-use. Server functionality was also provided by Etere.
The Playout and News infrastructure are based on latest Supermicro server’s while the headend is built around latest cutting edge FPGA HD encoding technology. The overall system is composed by six channels featuring 1+1 redundancy, and represents a compact – and thus energy-saving – addition to the Grass Valley broadcast infrastructure that Video Progetti assembled for Retecapri’.
“We are exceptionally happy with the system that Video Progetti have delivered to us” said Costantino Federico, Managing Director of Retecapri. “Not only does it meet the needs of our network on a technological level, but the quality of their service was of the highest order; close personal consultation, open communication, and careful adherence to deadlines and budget,” he concluded.
Speaking of their experience as service provider, Carlo Struzzi, CEO of Video Progetti said: “We work on an international level and take pride in working closely with all of our clients. But there has been a particular pleasure in working with Retecapri, whose broadcasting history and catalogue of classic Italian content hold a strong place in many of our hearts”. He continued: “We believe the system we have developed for Retecapri will ensure that they are able to continue to deliver the highest quality of content to Italian audiences across the country for years to come”.

Italian broadcast systems distributor and systems integrator Video Progetti has announced that it has completed the systems integration of Zero6, the latest addition to Soul Movie’s outside broadcast fleet.
With more than 10 years’ experience in production and post-production in the Italian entertainment business, Soul Movie is headquartered in Rome with offices in Milan.
Zero6 has already been put to use for the production of Mediaset’s Eurogames 2019 (the new name for Giochi Senza Frontiere/Games Without Frontiers/Jeux Sans Frontiers) – amusing games between European nations, with 300 competitors and 30 teams – which began to air in September.
With 70 square metres of floor space – enough to accommodate 36 crew and guests in comfort – Zero6 was architected and designed by Soul Movie to its usual standards of leading edge technology, elegance and comfort. It includes two video galleries and two sound galleries, and can be used simultaneously for the same event by two different broadcasters. The machine room includes a separate area for technical maintenance for the chief engineer.
“We have worked with Soul Movie for five years, and have always enjoyed how they combine advanced technology requirements with their highly developed aesthetic sense to create spaces that not only deliver extraordinary functionality and flexibility, but also a very pleasant working environment,” said Carlo Struzzi, CEO of Video Progetti. “As always, it’s been a pleasure to work with Soul Movie on helping create this exciting new facility.”
The van controls 28 Grass Valley or Sony cameras, and supports UHD, HDR and SDI quadrant and features a Grass Valley Sirius 850, the largest router installed in an OB van in Italy.
“Sirius 800 routers are the most powerful, versatile routers available,” said Francesco de Siena, CEO and owner of Soul Movie,” and so are ideal for a state-of-the-art facility like Zero6. They offer redundancy, expansion and unique processing capability, plus the highest capacity multiviewer outputs on the market.”
“It’s been wonderful to work with Video Progetti to see our vision for Zero6 come to life,” he continued. “We work for some of the highest profile organizations in the entertainment sector, delivering the highest quality standards in production and audio visual post production – and Video Progetti has been key in enabling us to continue to do that.”
Zero6 also includes a Sony video mixer and Lawo audio mixer. Additionally, the van features Lawo’s VSM – The Broadcast Control System VSM brings together all the requirements for a flexible broadcast operation, with its ‘everything under one roof’ philosophy uniting technical devices and operators in a highly flexible way. User panels and interfaces can be configured without limitation to meet the requirements of different workflows and applications, while the whole system is under redundant control.
Furthermore the Zero6 is equipped with a 6 RU 460-port Clear-Com Digital Matrix that includes the new V-Series Iris 24-key 2RU Rotary Panel. The system is multi-frame expandable and it enables redundant non-blocking fiber, intelligent trunking between systems over Ethernet/IP (Dante or AES67) or MADI. The Clear-Com intercom is integrated with a FreeSpeak II digital wireless system in order to meet the complex production requirements of live performance, entertainment and sports events.

Helps NVP respond to rapid growth in demand
Roma, Italy _ 28 August 2019- Italian broadcast distributor and systems integrator Video Progetti today announced that it’s working on a third project with leading outside broadcast facilities company NVP. Video Progetti had previously delivered two outside broadcast trucks to NVP, and has now been asked to consult on a third in response to the rapidly increasing demand for its services that NVP is experiencing.
OB4 was delivered to NVP two years ago, with OB6 supplied in 2018. Concurrently, NVP commissioned Video Progetti to upgrade OB4 to the same specification as OB6 – and has now ordered a third OB truck with the same flexible functionality and high performance as the previous units.
NVP was founded in 2007, and rapidly rose to prominence not only in Italy, but also internationally with its reputation for deploying the most current technologies supported by highly specialised teams. The company provides facilities for major sports – including football, volleyball and motorcycle racing – as well as television, movie and concert events, with highly developed expertise in responding to the technical, creative and content requirements of broadcasters and corporate customers. NVP counts many of the highest profile broadcasters among its numerous customers.
“We have worked with NVP since the company was founded,” said Carlo Struzzi, CEO of Video Progetti. “They trust us implicitly, and value the responsive, knowledgeable support we’re able to provide. What makes NVP an excellent company to work with is that we inspire each other whenever we start talking about a new project such as a new OB truck. They have a way of thinking that reflects ours – that choosing and using the right technologies and products can not only enable the broadest possible range of customer requirements to be satisfied, but also that they can continue to do so well into the future.”
NVP’s two OB trucks are ideal for the coverage of live sports events considering that the second truck can always be acting as a hot backup.
The additional OB truck is also planned to be 14 metres in length and capable of being expanded to a working area of 65 square metres. The trucks are capable of 45 minutes of autonomous operation, thanks to the inclusion of 400 kilogram batteries. A team of 35 operators can be accommodated in the dual video and audio production galleries.
Support is provided for 28 4K resolution cameras and 30 Ultra HD/HDR streams, although Video Progetti’s open architecture design of the trucks ensures they can be cost-effectively and easily upgraded to take advantage of future technology developments such as 8K resolution.
“Our company was founded by myself and my two brothers – Massimo and Natalino – out of our shared passion for this industry,” said Ivan Pintabona, technical director of NVP. “We have always focused on innovation – we spend a lot of time ensuring we keep up to date with the latest technology developments to ensure that what we’re doing is delivering the best value to our customers. But: we’re also very conscious that technology is not an end in itself – it’s a means to an end, and that end is using our creativity and our ability to think differently, to deliver solutions to our customers that respond to their specific needs, and that are of the highest quality. We like to think of ourselves as masters of technology – not slaves to it.”
